One of Keith’s most popular serious songs.
Here
is the poem (written at Bromyard Festival on September 21st 2001)
which Keith set to music to become ‘September 11th Song’ on
his Too Busy
Being Free album.
Two Tall Trees
There were two tall trees and a child I was
So small where they were so high
& I laid my hands out across their roots
& I touched both the earth and the sky
& the birds in their branches and the two tall trees
& the child down below that was me
Knew nothing at all of freedom then
We were too busy being free
But one day I came and the trees were gone
There were two tall holes in the sky
& the ground was strewn with their branches and leaves
& I looked to my roots and I cried
Oh and sad for the axemen I walked away
For whatever their reasons you see
My world now held only empty skies
Where once there were two tall trees
But now time has passed and it's old I am
& again I wanted to see
The two tall holes in the empty sky
& the place where the trees used to be
Now I'm not talking miracles - just Mother Nature
She carries on singing her song
Oh when I looked there were two small trees
But they'll be tall before too long
Oh when I looked there were two small trees
They'll be tall before too long
